What they are
Individually sealed pads saturated with 70% isopropyl alcohol, the concentration that disinfects most effectively (higher concentrations evaporate before they act). Pack of 100. Used to clean the rubber stopper of a vial before each puncture and the surface you are working on.
Alcohol swabs (also sold as alcohol prep pads or IPA swabs) are a laboratory basic; ours are stocked in the UK and ship with any order.
Why 70% and not 99%
Water is needed for the alcohol to penetrate microbial cell walls; 70% is the balance between disinfecting action and evaporation time. Pure IPA flashes off too fast to be effective.
In the laboratory
One swab per stopper per puncture, allowed to air-dry for a few seconds before the needle goes in. Also suitable for wiping down the work surface and the outside of syringes.

Quality and testing
Each lot of Alcohol Prep Swabs is sent to an independent UK laboratory before release for identity by mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, residual solvents and bacterial endotoxin. The lot number on the vial label matches the certificate on our certificates page, and no lot is released for sale until the certificate is in hand. Specification: Sterile, individually sealed, supplied as pack of 100.
Lot traceability
Every Alcohol Prep Swabs vial carries a printed lot number and expiry. The same lot number appears on the certificate of analysis for that batch, which names the testing laboratory and the report number so it can be verified directly. If the number on your vial does not match a certificate on our site, contact support before using it. Certificates are kept online for the life of the product plus two years.

Handling and storage
Room temperature. Keep sealed until use. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation on the powder. Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water added slowly down the wall of the vial; do not shake. Our calculator covers the arithmetic.
